November 15th-21st is National Apprenticeship Week! Did you know that Pennsylvania has over 1,500 registered apprenticeship programs? If your company is struggling to find qualified talent, investing in an apprenticeship program may provide a long-lasting solution for your hiring needs.
How is an apprentice different from an intern?
Apprenticeships are training programs that allow employers to develop their future workforce while providing individuals with a learn-while-you-earn approach to career development. While interns are typically students already enrolled in a post-secondary institution looking for outside work experience, apprentices receive their classroom instruction from their employer as well as paid on-the-job training.
Why should you establish an apprenticeship program?
- Build a workforce that meets YOUR needs: Through apprenticeship programs, your company has the opportunity to train your workforce to meet your organization’s standards. Whether you take a unique approach to customer experience, manufacture your products with personal touches, or play a niche role within your industry, your apprentice will have opportunities to demonstrate their skill proficiencies, making them an integral part of your organization.
- Boost retention: If you are hesitant to invest in an apprenticeship program out of fear that another company will recruit your apprentices after they complete their training, you can put those concerns to rest. Employees appreciate companies who invest in their professional development, and apprentices want to stay with the employer where they learned the tools for their trade. After completing an apprenticeship, they are likely comfortable with your company’s best practices and standards. The bottom line, apprentices are loyal to those who invest in them.
- Make a positive ROI: When you invest in specialized training, you develop a world-class workforce. The increased productivity, as well as reduced costs associated with turnover, can lead to long-term financial benefits for your business.
Establishing an apprenticeship program can help you distinguish yourself from other hiring employers within your industry!
