New jobs

The PA CareerLink at Hazleton sponsors regional job fairs where top employers can meet those looking for a new job. These job fairs may be regional; specific to certain industries, such as distribution centers; larger events that host a variety of employers; or even special events where those with disabilities can seek employment.

The job fair will provide you a chance to meet and talk with companies that are looking for new employees. You will certainly want to make a positive first impression with the company representatives who are attending the fair. If they perceive you in a negative manner during your first meeting, employers will probably not even bother to keep your resume. Use your best interview skills and remember that you are selling yourself to an employer. Be prepared to make a 30-second speech about yourself that will encourage the employer to bring you in for a longer interview.

When attending a job fair, remember that first impressions are very important. Some tips to keep in mind:

  • Attend by yourself.
  • Dress professionally, as if you are attending a full interview.
  • Have several copies of your résumé with you.
  • Bring two black pens for completing applications.
  • Take time before the job fair to practice what you will say to employers and to research companies in which you are interested. Showing that you are familiar with the company will make a positive impression on an employer.
  • Refrain from mentioning salary and benefits at your initial meeting.
  • Pay attention to your body language and ensure you are communicating with the employer in a positive and effective manner.
